Our University Partnership
BOUSD HONORED BY CSUF
Mariposa is a significant part of the "Honor an Educator for School Excellence" Award given by Cal State Fullerton to only two organizations per year. This effective 16-year partnership between Mariposa and CSUF brings many resources to our school, including but not limited to: funding, professional development, research, student teachers, interns, information and conferences. Our successful collaborative empowers both CSUF and Mariposa to benefit all students, both at our elementary school as well as at the university. Their support is greatly appreciated as it positively affects our success for all. A special thank you to Dr. Belinda Karge of CSUF for starting this partnership almost two decades ago, allowing Mariposa to become a wonderful PDS (Professional Development Site) for the university.
Mariposa is Honored to be an EISS Grant Recipient
We are thrilled to share the news that Mariposa has received the EISS $50,000 Grant for professional development spanning from 2012-2014. This grant is designed for Early Intervention for School Success. The money is earmarked for Kindergarten through second grade teachers to gain training in the areas of: Common Core Standards, RtI (Response to Intervention), and Technology. What great news to finally have some funding for conferences, training, and more. Our students and staff deserve the best, and this grant will serve to enhance our effective best teaching practices. We are one of 19 schools across the state of California to receive this grant. Now, in year two of our grant, we are looking for training at our site that benefits all Mariposa staff and students. Congratulations Mariposa!

3 New Portable Chromebook Labs Added at Mariposa!
We Have Great News Mariposa Families!
We have added 120 Google Chromebooks to our school. Through Common Core Standards funding from the state, the district has purchased 3 carts and 120 Chromebooks for student use! We are so excited to have this added technology at our school. Our rollout will begin with 3-6 grade, as our students learn how to access our programs on these devices. There was excitement in the air as our Technology Team (Ms. Chamberlain, Mrs. Bithell, Mrs. Bo Miller, and Dr. C) unpacked the many boxes. Thank you to our volunteers for helping us. A special shout out to Mr. Joseph Covey, who spent half of the day with us in this endeavor.
So far, our bandwidth has been expanded in the upper grade wing, rooms 9-16. All 3rd-6th grade classes will have access to the Chromebooks in this wing of classrooms. When the cart is rolled to their class, each student will have a laptop at their fingertips. Our students are thrilled to have this experience. And, we are taking full advantage of this opportunity to empower our children to use this new technology. The bandwidth will be done in the rest of the school this July! We can't wait!
See the video below to observe the excitement at The Home of the Monarchs! (It takes a minute to upload. Wait for it...)

IT BEGINS HERE AT MARIPOSA
Mariposa is first to start a new tradition with Brea Olinda High School. The Boys' Varsity Basketball Head Coach Darryl Hilliard invited Mariposa to be featured at half time on the court. He worked with Dr. Cunningham to include both academics and athletics as they planned how his team could make a positive impact in our classrooms through reading and public speaking. Three seniors players, Sam, Jonathan, and Chandler, came to speak and read to our first grade classes. It was exciting to have them answer questions and share with our students. We had "Green and Gold Day" at school, and at our SPIRIT Ceremony we cheered for BOHS. At night, we came in large numbers to represent Mariposa in our school colors on the court. We took up one third of the visitors' side bleachers. The Wildcat Den (students from the high school) chanted "MAR-I-PO-SA" for us! So cool! BOHS dominated the game, defeating the 1st place Villa Park Team. The game was very exciting. See the pictures below. (Again...it takes a minute to upload. It's worth the wait.) We love this new tradition, as it brings our community together. Go BREA!

Dr. C is the National Distinguished Principal for the State of California!
A big congratulations and highest honor goes to one of our own. Dr. Helene Cunningham is the 2013 National Distinguished Principal for the state of California. She will represent our state at meetings in Sacramento and across the nation for education. In October, she will toured the White House in Washington DC, collaborated with the NDPs from other states, and met with the US Secretary of Education. After 17 years in the role of principal, 9 at middle school, and 8 at Mariposa Elementary School, where she currently serves at our school, Dr. C is honored to speak about education and have a voice that benefits all children. Anne Flesher, BOUSD Assistant Superintendent of Personnel states, "If the process for National Distinguished Principal leads state leaders to this school and to this exceptional leader, then it's a great process. So well deserved, Helene." Mariposa staff members are elated and proud of their school leader. Dr. Cunningham expressed, "I am humbled by this recognition, and so honored to represent Mariposa, BOUSD, Brea, and Orange County for the state. When you put children first, effective decisions are readily available. Thank you to the community of Brea, and the students, staff, families, and parents of Mariposa who support me on a consistent basis. It is the concerted effort toward educating and preparing students for their future that makes a significant difference for our children. We must secure their tomorrow today." Dr. Cunningham is to be commended for her diligence and visionary leadership. She encourages students and staff with her motivating quote, "Your work is your signature, so sign it with excellence." Thank you, Dr. C, for leading with that inspirational model. You can see the state's press release on Dr. C in our Homepage Locker in the right column of this page. Way to go, Dr. C!

Mariposa is Awarded for Excellence A Second Year in a Row
Kudos to You, Monarchs!
Mariposa is being recognized by the business community of California for our outstanding success in raising student academic achievement. After an extensive analysis of student achievement data for every public school in California, our school was one that stood well above the rest in getting our students to grade level proficiency and beyond. It is for this reason we have been named a California Business of Education Excellence Honor Roll School! We received this award last year for 2011, and again this year for 2012! Thank you to our entire community for supporting the stellar education of our children.

LET'S TRAVEL TO STUDY ISLAND
At Mariposa, we've had Study Island for English Language Arts in the areas of reading, writing and grammar for the past two years. Last year, we added Study Island Science for our 4th and 5th grade students. Both of our programs are web-based and your child can access this supplemental technology from home as well. Let's get back to the Island!
Box Tops for Mariposa
Please help us collect Box Tops. If you will cut them out, and have your child turn them in to his or her homeroom teacher, we will benefit as a school. This collective effort helps us purchase much needed supplies and materials. You are bringing money to our students' programs. We thank you in advance for being our partners in this worthy endeavor.
